Review of NO GOOD DEEDS by Laura Lippman (see her website)

    A TESS MONAGHAN NOVEL

    William Morrow, June 2006

Private investigator Tess Monaghan is in trouble again. It's partly her boyfriend Crow's fault; he's the one who brought home a half-starved teenage boy, Lloyd Jupiter, who turned out to be a key witness in the murder of an Assistant U.S. Attorney. But as usual, Tess is the one who digs her own pit when she kidnaps Lloyd and pressures him into revealing what he knows to a newspaper reporter. She only wants to solve the case, but really she's thumbing her nose at incompetent authorities whom she believes (and rightly so) couldn't solve the case without her help. But authorities turn the tables on her by pressuring her to reveal her source. Without the shield laws that protect reporters to keep her out of jail, Tess has to talk or face jail time. But she promised Lloyd, who fears for his life, that she would not give him up.

This is a fantastically well-plotted crime novel, with enough twists and turns to baffle and delight any reader. The characters are so sharply drawn, you'd swear they're going to walk through the door. The tension doesn't let up for a minute, and the action-packed ending is a fitting conclusion. Laura Lippman has just moved to my auto-read list.
