THE ROCKY MOUNTAIN MOVING PICTURE ASSOCIATION by Loren D. Estleman (see his website)

Dmitri Pulski works for his father's ice company and dreams of becoming Jack London. When his father sends him to Hollywood in 1913 to see if the Rocky Mountain Moving Picture Association is good for the ten tons of ice they've ordered, he joins the world of the silent film in an era when Hollywood is just a dream.

The Trust, a cartel of east coast and foreign film makers are using the Edison patents in an attempt to close down the infant Hollywood movie industry. Pulski, who adopts the name Tom Boston, fights Pinkertons and corrupt county sheriffs to keep the independent film makers in business.

Loren D. Estleman (see more BooksForABuck.com reviews of novels by Estleman) has done an effective job capturing the spirit of Los Angeles--the city that never made sense, built on the desert hundreds of miles from the nearest decent natural harbor. The story draws in the reader and charges forward at almost movie speed.
