Review of WITCHY WOMAN by Karen Leabo (see her website)

    BooksForABuck.com, July 2004

Witchy Woman by Karen Leabo cover Years ago, Tess DeWitt had been Moonbeam Majick, a child psysic who mystified the experts on television. Now, Tess simply wants to be ordinary, earn a living at her job as a Boston-area software product manager, and pretend that the disasters of the past never took place. But when she spots the Crimson Cat, a statue of a red panther, in an antique store, she knows that the ancient curse has caught up with her, with her friend Judy, and with the handsome reporter who accidentally bumped into them outside the antique store.

Freelance reporter Nate Wagner can almost see the dollar signs from a writeup on the current whereabouts of the famous child psysic. He doesn't believe in that stuff, of course. And when bad things start to happen the second he touches the cat statue, he's sure it is just coincidence. But he feels an instant attraction to Tess. Sure she's a story, but she's also an attractive woman. And she does have a strange way of being able to tell what he's thinking just by touching him.

Nate's skepticism gradually fades as a terrible disease strikes Judy and a strange man shows up looking for the cat--and willing to do almost anything--including violence--to get his hands on it. The two have to work together to overcome the dangers--but Tess is super-sensitive. If she even touches anyone, she's overwhelmed by their feelings and fears. Spending time with Nate makes her want to touch him--and maybe even finally shed her status as the only twenty-eight-year-old virgin in Boston.

Author Karen Leabo (see more BooksForABuck.com reviews of novels by Leabo) combines sexy romance, intriguing paranormal adventure, and a nice blend of humor into a very strong novel. Tess, in particular, makes a sympathetic character, damaged by the talent that she could never control and that never let her experience a normal life as well as the family curse. Nate's own background and his inherent need to touch makes him a perfect foil.

WITCHY WOMAN is bound to please both hardcore paranormal romance fans and those looking for a fun romance. Like all www.BooksForABuck.com e-novels, it's a bargain at only $3.99.

Note: WITCHY WOMAN, in a slightly different form, was first published by Bantam LoveSwept in July, 1998.
