Review of Review of DETOUR by Sylvie Kurtz (see her website)

    Silhouette Bombshell #104, August 2006

Review by Cathy Richard Dodson (see her website)

When a neglected cold leads to a viral infection in her heart, P.I. Sierra Martindale finds herself at death's door--until an accident victim's heart brings her a second chance at life. What she doesn't expect, however, is that the donor's ghost comes with along with her new heart! Although at first Sierra thinks she's losing her mind, little by little she begins to listen to 'Sofia' and becomes convinced the woman's death was no accident at all.

Still not completely convinced she isn't losing her mind, Sierra follows the voice in her head from New Hampshire to Ft. Worth, Texas, where the Sofia lived prior to her death. But Sierra wants her life back, and she believes in order to have it, she's got to discover why Sofia was killed and bring her killer to justice. That journey begins by contacting Wyatt James, the man to whom Sofia had been married, a rancher and champion rider, a Sierra to whom finds herself instantly attracted. But is the attraction hers, or Sofia's?

As Wyatt and Sierra begin to unravel clues about the project Sofia had been working on for Allied Defense, a manufacturer of military aircraft systems, they realize recent plane crashes may be connected to a faulty systems part Sofia had known of and wanted to expose. Someone wanted it kept quiet, bad enough to kill. Will Wyatt and Sofia be able to expose the killer and ground future flights before Wyatt's sister, an Air Force pilot herself, flies again? And will Sierra ever be free from Sofia's ghost, free enough to think about a future with Wyatt, with whom she finds herself falling in love?

Detour is a fast-moving, well-written, well-researched Silhouette Bombshell, one of the best I've read. The characters are strong and the ending surprised me. Having lived in Fort Worth, I enjoyed the trip back to Sundance Square and other locals in that city. I'd recommend this one to anyone who loves aviation, horses, the paranormal, and just a darn good mystery!
